CLIFTON, N.J.—A New Jersey dentist known for his elaborate and colorful holiday lawn displays took things a bit too far—at least in the estimation of one of his neighbors—when he set up an Easter display that featured “female mannequins clad as Playboy Bunnies, complete with lingerie, fishnet stockings and bunny ears,” according to a CNN report. That neighbor took garden shears to the display, and has since been charged with third-degree criminal mischief.
The incident made national headlines, but the dentist, Wayne Gangi, kept his display up—end even added to it, supplementing the Playboy Bunny-style mannequins with bare-chested “male” mannequins as well.
And now Gangi has taken the advice of a different neighbor and, just in time for Easter, converted the ever-so-slightly risque lawn display into a philanthropic enterprise, of sorts.
The Easter-appropriate cause: the rebuilding of France’s historic, eight-century-old Notre Dame Cathedral, which was devastated by fire on Monday, April 15.
The neighbor suggested that Gangi put up a sign and a collection bin, informing passerby by that donations would benefit the Cathedral’s restoration. The cost of repairing and restoring the badly damaged religious and cultural landmark has been estimated to be somewhere around a whopping $8 billion, according to a Reuters report.
Gangi’s Easter display has now made at least a very small dent in that cost, raking in $30 in the first hour that the donation bucket was in place. But Gangi since had to bring the bucket indoors, for fear that it could be vulnerable once again to the outrage of an angry neighbor offended by the “sexy” mannequins.
